Carved Boxes

Carved Boxes are handmade using wood culled from local fallen trees, oak pine and cedar, the boxes originate from the hurricanes that have hit North Carolina, Fran and Floyd in particular. They are cut in my sawmill and "air dried" for several years, before being formed into the boxes with a "medieval flavor“.
The decorations reflect the mythical and real animals used in Heraldry, Lions, Griffins (the head and body of a lion and the wings of an eagle), many of these also had religious significance and can be seen on many early churches - the griffin in early church decoration was associated with Jesus.
Lions were popular embellishments - implying courage and ferocity, the Fleur de Lys was a French royal symbol but appears on English royal arms reflecting the claims dating from the 100 years war when England did own most of France! The use of most of these images in heraldry dates from the 12th century and a wide range of symbols were put together in a variety of ways to form unique coats of arms, following strict and complicated rules, for noble families (or ones that could afford them!) each symbol represented some aspect of their family history. All of the leading knights of the crusades back in the 12th to 15th centuries would have had and they can be seen throughout the Mediterranean and Europe dating from the times when the possession of a coat of arms put you at the top of society in the day.
The "Green Man" is a more ambiguous figure, guardian of the woods and forest always seen peering between the leaves, also a popular name for Pubs in England! In earlier centuries the range of furniture was more limited than it is today and boxes of all kinds were very common from roughly nailed planks to elaborate chests, used for all kinds of storage, the more mobile the family the more likely that their possession would be kept in boxes or trunks.
